The passports of Ghana allow you to enter 65 countries visa-free, and it is enough to show your ID card if you wish to visit most of the other ECOWAS countries. The travel documents are valid for ten years, and thanks to diplomatic efforts, it is the 74th strongest passport in the World. The first Ghana naturalisation program started in 2019 for applicants who are descendants of slaves from Africa, and they received their citizenship in the same year. Subsequently, the government launched a new naturalisation program from 2020 to 2030 called "Beyond Return." The largest group of applicants (524 people!) received their certificate of citizenship in January 2025.

The Ghana Citizenship Act provides two main pathways for diaspora Ghanaians: citizenship by descent and naturalisation. Citizenship by descent is available to individuals with Ghanaian ancestry, enabling them to claim nationality without undergoing lengthy procedures. Naturalisation, on the other hand, requires applicants to fulfil the requirements, such as a period of residence, good character, and language proficiency in English or a Ghanaian language. This pathway is suitable for those who have integrated into Ghanaian society or have established strong ties with the country.

Legal provisions aim that diaspora Ghanaians with dual citizenship can enjoy rights similar to those of natural-born citizens, including the right to purchase property, establish businesses, and participate in national elections. Dual citizenship is also allowed.
